What is PLR and What is it For?
ByIf you’ve been doing internet marketing for any length of time at all, you’ve probably come across the term PLR (private label rights). So, what is PLR and how is it different from master resell rights (MRR) and other licenses? Do these differences even matter?
PLR is a standard for licensing rights applying to intellectual property. This could be written content as well as audiovisual materials. The license allows you to use this content in any way you see fit once you’ve purchased the material.
Someone wrote, designed or recorded this content. However, they for one reason or another have decided against selling these products themselves and they license it to other people or businesses to market and sell instead.
There are different kinds of websites which offer PLR content for sale. Some sites are accessible to anyone and others require you to sign up for a membership in order to purchase their PLR materials. Since not all of the material on any given PLR site is going to be useful for you, you’ll want to make very sure that these sites are worth the extra time and expense of signing up. Sites which don’t require you to get a membership let your pick and choose the content you want a la carte which most people find more convenient.
The PLR license for the content offered for sale will specify what you are and are not permitted to do with the material. The most useful PLR content of all is content which offers unconditional use. This means that you can literally do anything you see fit with the material. You can rewrite, edit, re-mix, repurpose and generally suit it to your needs. You may even be able to resell your PLR material!
Even PLR material with an otherwise unconditional license may stipulate that you can’t resell this material. Be sure to read and make sure you understand the terms of the licensing. If they don’t allow you to use the material in the way you need, then pass it by; there’s plenty of other PLR content to be had out there.
You’ll also want to take a look at the material before you buy. See if you can view a sample so you have an idea of what you’re getting. There is PLR content which is comparable in quality to what you’d pay a small fortune for from an ad agency or a marketing consultancy and PLR content which is completely without value. With written material, Google a sentence or two in quotes so you can see how many others are already using this content. If everyone and their mother is using the same content, you’ll probably want to pass.
Unconditionally licensed PLR content can be your best friend as an internet marketer. The cost of the material is incredibly low (usually somewhere in the $50-$200 range) compared to the time you’d spend researching, writing or recording it yourself and far cheaper than hiring a professional to produce it specifically for you. If you shop wisely for content, you can get an incredible value on some truly first class material.
