Over the last several years, I have written a great deal on the topic of listening.  Most people know that listening is an important skill but they don’t really know why.  Here are a few of the sayings I have written that I have used in various articles over the last several years.

1 speaker + 1 Listener = an effective communication equation.”

In order for effective communication to take place, we need at least one listener. The most articulate person will have no success in communicating his thoughts if there isn’t at least one person who is truly listening.  Hearing isn’t listening.  If you have children, you’ll understand this.  Johnny hears you, but he doesn’t understand what you’ve asked him to do.  He may have given the appropriate response, but he wasn’t really listening.  You know this because he eventually comes downstairs with his half empty hamper instead of taking the garbage out. December 2nd, 2011The Power of Thank You!

Did you ever notice how little kids show appreciation?  My son comes to me several times a day and says things like “I love you!  You are the best mommy in the whole world!”  The conviction of his words and the look on his face as he utters them are what touch my heart!  That’s what true appreciation is.

Most of us teach our children to say thank you, but few of us really understand its power.  Showing appreciation is not only etiquette, but it is a responsibility especially during the holidays.

I was privileged to have been in the audience when Florence Littauer was speaking on “Silver Boxes”.  It’s what she calls her philosophy on appreciation and edification.  She quotes Ephesians 4:29.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

As an internet marketing consultant, I have a pretty unique skill set. That said, I found myself last March an indirect victim of the struggling housing market when I got laid off.

The worst part about getting laid off – no one in my area was hiring for my skill set. So not only was I laid off, I had no solid job leads.

After I lost my job, I realized the time had come to do my own thing. I was already comfortable with the internet, so why not put it to good use and my own benefit? Once I became so frustrated that I knew I wasn’t going to find a great job opportunity, I decided to begin working from home.

A lot of people have the wrong perception of working from home. They think I’m lazy or don’t really have any “skills” to get a “real job.” They also think what I do is easy. I wanted to take a second to dispel those rumors. Working from home isn’t always easy – I mean it’s not like I just woke up one morning and fell on a pile of money. Lots of effort is required, but that’s the case with every job, if I’m not mistaken. Read the rest of this entry »

These days we can all use a bigger income but it is definitely easier said than done.  But the internet has given us all opportunities that were never possible before to make our own success.  There are many people who make a good living online and many who claim to have gotten rich but there are also many people who are trying and trying but nothing is happening.  I tried for several years before I started making a good living online so I would like to share some of the things that helped me increase my income.  Although I have not tried every method listed below, I have tried several of them and they have worked for me.

1.  Sell Resell eBooks and Software – You can easily add a digital product store script to your existing blog and sell ebooks and software with resell rights.  Ebooks are very popular and the demand for them is increasing.   You can also sell videos, music and other downloadable files from your digital store. Virtual [Admin/Exec/Personal] Assistant Jobs

The key to success with children is teaching them good values that they can take with them for the rest of their lives. Values that will help them excel more at school and even work later in life. And in today’s fast-paced lifestyle one of the most valuable lessons for them to learn is the value of patience and self-control. Showing your children how to wait for things and not get everything “NOW” can go a long way for teaching them life lessons. A great example of this can be found in Dr. David Schapira’s book, Fetus to Fifth Grade. In the book he recounts an experiment done at Stanford University by psychologist Walter Mischel.

Mischel published a study on children at the preschool on the Stanford University campus. He sat them down with a marshmallow. They were told that the research assistant had to leave for a few minutes (approximately 20 minutes) but if they did not eat the marshmallow during that time they would be rewarded with another marshmallow. Some of the children ate the marshmallow, but some did not and forced themselves to wait by thinking of other distractions, talking to themselves, playing games with their hands or trying to fall asleep. He then followed all of the children for a long period of time afterwards.

When evaluated later as teenagers, those children who resisted eating the marshmallow and exhibited delayed gratification were: Read the rest of this entry »

Finding clients when working as a home based business is usually the number one challenge that these companies face. Finding an economical way to advertise or get the word out about their product or services is sometimes overwhelming.

Many entrepreneurs do not know how to find effective methods of marketing so they frequent farmers markets or trade shows and approach their friends and families to purchase their products. As attending these venues can become costly in money and time, finding another way to promote their operation becomes a top priority.

Traditional methods of advertising can also be costly and limits the area that the message is reaching. So how can they get this information out to their target markets? Working with a Virtual Assistant is a cost effective method to put successful marketing in place. Here’s how: Read the rest of this entry »
